Hi,

me

What comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb?

OK, I'm sure you know.
But did you know what comes inbetween?
National Nutrition Month!

This year the theme set by the American Dietetic Association (ADA), is 100% Fad Free.
And so...that's our theme this month, too.

Hope you enjoy and learn something new!

All the best,

Sue

PS. As always...let me know If you have a nutrition question you would like to see answered in an upcoming newsletter!

Good Foods and Bad Foods

Its not what you think

Last week I graded the final papers for a nutrition course that I teach at a local community college. The assignment required students to keep a food and exercise diary for 3 days, and then write an analysis of their health habits.

I was struck by the number of students who talked about "good" and "bad" food, and how they felt about each of these. Those who mentioned eating too much "bad" food, also expressed feelings of shame and guilt over their choices, almost like they had committed a terrible sin!

I don't know about you, but when last I checked the 10 Commandments didn't include "Thou shall not eat chocolate cake."

Some interesting nutrition tidbits

Did you know?
A study done in Holland found that a poor diet caused as much health damage as smoking, lowering life expectancy by 1.2 years.

Confused about what to believe?
Approximately 80% of Americans believe that in five years the advice from experts on what to eat will be different than it is today.

Snack attack?
According to a Datamonitor survey, average Americans eat 231 morning snacks, 283 afternoon snacks and 261 evening snacks per year. And those were only the one that survey participants admitted to!

Watching portion sizes?
In 1984 the recipe for Nestle's Toll House Cookies made 100 cookies and according to the package, in 1987 the exact same recipe only yielded 60 cookies! Hmmm...

Here's another portion distortion.
A study done at the University of Arkansas found that when eating out, individuals underestimate the number of calories in their meals by 600.
